We Have Just Launched Three Fantastic Intranets!

Over the last few months Energetica have been busy developing and launching three new intranets. Intranets are closed websites, only acessible by people with passwords, generally employees, networks or members.

Just like websites, design, layout and functionality are key to developing a successful intranet and we work very closely with our customers when we are developing a site for them. Intranets need to be highly functional - after all staff need to use them multiple times per day and they are places for important documents, policies and communications.

Unfortunately, we can't share with you who the organisations we have set up intranets for due to privacy issues - but we can share with you the benefits of an intranet for your organisation and some of the neat functions that can be incorporated into them.

Design Tip - keep your sites font type consistent

By this we mean always strive for uniformity in your font, such as font type, use of capitals, use of italics and bold etc.

We often come across sites that might have some headings typed all in capitals, or font styles changing. It's messy and it looks unprofessional. Unfortunately it seems to happen more in smaller organisations where multiple people (often volunteers) are adding content. Never disuade volunteers from contributing to the upkeep of your site, but set some uniform style guidelines.

Australian Universities Failing in Student Engagement

A new report from the Australian Council for Education Research (ACER) has found about 30% of University graduates considered dropping out at some point in their degree - and these figures don't take in to account the huge number of students that did actually drop out.

The report highlights how disconnected many academic staff are from their students - staff estimated the figure to be merely one in ten.

It is baffling to me why Universities aren't better at using web technology to engage. Universities have become another example of a missed opportunity to engage and interact, rather they limit their web strategies to being primarily marketing tools.

That 2020 Summit Thing

I wrote about the 2020 summit while it was still fresh and we could all remain enthusiastic about the process. Now it is one year on and the memory fades. What difference did it make to me and to Australia. Here are some of the reflections.

For my business the 2020 Summit was great. I met Lyndsey Jackson and offered her a job and she is now a valuable member of the Energetica team. The team would be diminished without Lyndsey's unique sense of humour. We've converted her. She is still a newbie, but she is on the road to geekgirl.

Personally it was a great privilege to be a part of the event. To sit in the room with some of the giants of our society and to be there as their equal was uplifting and humbling. In the end it is a recognition of some of our better values, ones that are easy to lose sight of in our increasingly complex divisions. Standing on the same field as great thinkers was truly inspiring.
